FAQ · 24 Questions Answered
Everything you need to know before your trip, answered directly with real numbers.
Yes. You need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a motorcycle category. Police checkpoints do occur, especially in Seminyak and Kuta. The fine for no licence is around 50,000–250,000 IDR. In practice, most checkpoints let tourists through—but carry your IDP.
Yes. Bali is one of Southeast Asia's safest destinations for solo travel. Petty theft can occur in crowded areas—use a crossbody bag. Avoid unlicensed taxis at the airport. Gojek and Grab are the safest and cheapest transport options.
Low season is October to March (wet season). Accommodation prices drop 20–40%. Expect daily afternoon rain, mostly short bursts. Surf is best April–October on the west coast, and October–April on the east (Amed).
Bring USD, EUR, or AUD in cash—these get the best exchange rates at licensed money changers. Avoid airport exchange booths. ATMs charge 30,000–50,000 IDR per withdrawal. Use a no-fee travel card if possible.
No—never drink tap water in Bali. Buy bottled water (5,000–8,000 IDR for 1.5L) or use a refill station (5,000 IDR/litre). Many guesthouses provide free filtered water. Bring a reusable bottle.
Citizens of most countries get a free 30-day Visa on Arrival (VOA). This can be extended once at an immigration office for another 30 days (~500,000 IDR). Check your country's specific status on the Indonesian immigration website.
Local SIM cards (Telkomsel or XL) cost 30,000–80,000 IDR including data. Available at the airport and at minimarkets (Alfamart, Indomaret). A 10GB data package adds approximately 50,000–70,000 IDR.
Bali is mid-range for Southeast Asia. It is cheaper than Singapore and Thailand's tourist centres, roughly on par with Vietnam, and more expensive than Cambodia or Laos. The tourist areas (Seminyak, Kuta) are pricier—stay slightly off the main strips to cut costs 30–50%.
